First Human Heart Transplant (December 3, 1967): Dr. Christiaan Barnard performed the Þrst human heart transplant in South
Africa. The patient Louise Washkansky, lived for 18 days after the surgery.
Discovery of Other Galactic Systems, (December 30 of 1924): Astronomer Edwin Hubble announced the existence of other
galaxies beyond the Milky Way, changing our understanding of the universe.
First Radio Broadcast From Space (December 19, 1958): Astronauts aboard the Gemini 6 mission play ÒJingle BellsÓ on a
harmonica and sleigh bells, marking the Þrst song broadcast from space as a holiday prank.
South Pole Reached (December 14, 1911): Norwegian explorer Roald Amundsen and his team were the Þrst to reach the south
Pole, winning the race against Robert Falcon Scott.
